While missing nameplates or weathered paint do not automatically eliminate value, verifiable factory tags dramatically accelerate appraisal and maximize purchase offers.
Secondary market valuation and demand drivers
Secondary market pricing is governed by the completeness of the automation package, wetted metallurgy, severe-service trim features, and manufacturer reputation. Complete assemblies pairing Fisher, Masoneilan, or Valtek bodies with original spring-diaphragm actuators and digital positioners (such as FIELDVUE DVC6200) achieve the highest recovery percentages. Specialized anti-cavitation trim cages (such as Fisher Cavitrol III) or aerodynamic noise-attenuation trims (Whisper Trim III) add thousands of dollars in resale value compared to standard utility trim.
Field inspection and defect screening protocol
When inspecting surplus control valves, do not uncouple the actuator or remove the digital positioner before capturing photos. Examine the valve stem in the packing box area for deep scoring, galling, or bent alignment. Check the actuator diaphragm casing for external impact damage and verify that the positioner feedback arm moves smoothly without mechanical binding. Photograph all attached tags: the valve body nameplate, the actuator serial plate, the digital controller tag, and any attached supply filter-regulators.
Flange protection, packaging, and freight handling
Control valves must be shipped upright on heavy-duty hardwood GMA pallets, secured with heavy timber blocking around the body bowl and diagonal 2x4 bracing anchored to the actuator yoke. Delicate digital positioners, solenoid valves, and stainless steel impulse tubing must be wrapped in heavy bubble wrap or corrugated cushioning to prevent impact damage during transit. Install heavy plastic or plywood flange protectors over all raised faces to keep internal cavities dry.
Send photographs before modifying the equipment. Preserve original tags, flange faces, packing, wiring, tubing, operators, and documentation. If prior service or condition is unknown, say so directly. A precise unknown is more credible than a guessed specification.
