Complete Fisher Control Valve Assemblies: Body, Actuator & Positioner

A complete Fisher control valve installation is an integrated control loop component consisting of four primary subsystems: the pressure-retaining valve body and bonnet, the internal cage-guided or contour trim, the pneumatic spring-and-diaphragm or piston actuator, and the digital or pneumatic positioner. When evaluating surplus equipment, buyers prioritize complete assemblies that preserve the original factory mechanical pairing.

Separating an actuator or positioner from a Fisher valve body before evaluation frequently destroys valuable provenance. The actuator serial tag and travel calibration often provide the key to deciphering a worn or painted-over valve body figure number. We advise all industrial sellers to photograph and inventory the entire assembly as an intact unit prior to any uncoupling or storeroom segregation.

If your inventory includes loose Fisher bodies or standalone actuators, we still actively evaluate them. Fisher E-Body globe valves constitute the most common and versatile control valve family in industry. The standard lineup includes the easy-e ED (balanced cage-guided globe for general utility and process service), the ET (balanced tight-shutoff design with PTFE or graphite seals for higher temperatures), the EZ (unbalanced post-guided single-port design for viscous or mildly slurry fluids), and the EWT / EHT (expanded body designs for high-capacity or steam turbine bypass duty).

For rotary throttling, Fisher Vee-Ball valves (including the V150 flanged, V200 flangeless/wafer, and V300 heavy-duty ANSI flanged series) are widely deployed across pulp, paper, and petrochemical processing. High-performance butterfly valves like the Fisher 8500 and 8580 series, as well as HP severe-service globe bodies rated up to ANSI Class 2500, represent high-value surplus items due to long factory lead times on replacement castings.

When documenting Fisher bodies, look for the raised cast lettering on the side of the bowl (e.g., 'WCB', 'CF8M', 'WC9') indicating body metallurgy, as well as cast arrows indicating flow direction. The riveted stainless steel nameplate affixed to the bonnet or body neck provides the exact serial number, size, rating, and original trim code.

Fisher Pneumatic Actuators: 657, 667 & Rotary 1051/1052/2052

The actuator provides the motive force to position the valve plug against dynamic process fluid forces. The industry-standard Fisher pneumatic diaphragm actuators are the Model 657 (direct-acting: air-to-push-down / air-to-close on push-down-to-close bodies) and the Model 667 (reverse-acting: air-to-push-up / air-to-open on push-down-to-close bodies). Standard diaphragm casing sizes range from Size 30 and 34 up to heavy-duty Size 70 and 100 units.

For rotary valves, Fisher employs spring-return diaphragm actuators including the 1051, 1052, and the modern compact 2052 series, alongside heavy pneumatic piston actuators (such as the 1061) designed for high breakaway breakout torque. Actuator valuation depends on physical casing integrity, absence of deep corrosion around the diaphragm diaphragm flange ring, straightness of the polished actuator stem, and spring casing tags.

Photograph the actuator nameplate clearly. This tag records the actuator type, size, bench set spring range (e.g., 3-15 psig, 6-30 psig), maximum allowable diaphragm casing pressure (typically 40 to 65 psig), operating travel stroke, and handwheel override model if equipped.

FIELDVUE Digital Valve Controllers: DVC6200, DVC6000 & 3610J Positioners

Instrumentation accounts for a substantial portion of a control valve's secondary market value. Emerson's FIELDVUE digital valve controllers—specifically the DVC6200 (featuring non-contact magnetostrictive travel feedback) and the classic DVC6000 series—are universally sought across industrial automation facilities for HART and FOUNDATION Fieldbus protocol communication.

Legacy analog pneumatic positioners, including the Fisher 3610J and 3620J electro-pneumatic positioners, also maintain strong replacement demand for facilities running legacy 4-20 mA or 3-15 psi pneumatic instrumentation loops. The presence of undamaged positioner housings, intact terminal compartments, uncorroded pressure gauges, and clean conduit entries substantially elevates lot value.

Always check that the positioner feedback arm, magnet array, and linkage pins are undamaged. Positioners that have suffered terminal water ingress through unsealed conduit hubs or physical impact during rigging represent repairable rather than prime surplus.

Fisher Trim Codes, Metallurgy & Severe-Service Hardfacing

A Fisher control valve's internal trim dictates its pressure-drop capability, cavitation resistance, and aerodynamic noise attenuation. Standard trim consists of 316 stainless steel or hardened 416 stainless steel. However, severe-service trims featuring solid Stellite No. 6, tungsten carbide inserts, or ceramic components carry major capital value.

Specialized Fisher anti-cavitation trims—such as Cavitrol III multi-stage cages engineered to step down extreme liquid pressure drops without vapor bubble implosion—and Whisper Trim I / III aerodynamic cages designed to reduce acoustic noise in high-velocity gas lines command top-tier pricing from surplus asset buyers. The trim code stamped on the body nameplate (e.g., 'Trim 101', 'Trim 107', 'Cavitrol 2-Stage') identifies these internal configurations without requiring body disassembly.

In corrosive chemical service, Fisher valves constructed from exotic alloys including Alloy 20, Hastelloy C-276, Monel 400, or Titanium represent rare and highly sought-after acquisitions. Sellers possessing original Material Test Reports (MTRs) or factory spec sheets should always provide them to verify metallurgy.
