A ball valve's internal mechanical architecture fundamentally determines its secondary market application. Floating ball valves rely on line pressure pushing the ball against downstream elastomeric seats, making them ideal for small-to-medium sizes and moderate pressures. Trunnion-mounted ball valves mechanically support the ball on heavy internal bearings, enabling low operating torque and dual-sealing shutoff in high-pressure and large-diameter pipelines.

Secondary market valuation and demand drivers

Trunnion-mounted API 6D pipeline valves from premier manufacturers—such as Cameron, W-K-M, Grove, PBV, KF, and Balon—command top secondary market prices. Metal-seated severe-service ball valves (engineered by Mogas, ValvTechnologies, or Vanessa) designed for slurry or 1,000°F steam service carry exceptional capital recovery value. High-volume lots of three-piece threaded/socket-weld forged stainless valves also sell rapidly.

Field inspection and defect screening protocol

Inspect the spherical surface of the ball through the open bore under strong lighting. Look for scratch tracks, erosion pitting, or foreign material embedded in elastomeric seat rings. For automated assemblies, check that pneumatic Scotch-yoke actuators, limit switches, and solenoid valves are intact. Photograph the valve body nameplate, the ball port, and both flange faces.

Flange protection, packaging, and freight handling

Ball valves must always be transported in the 100% fully open position. Shipping a ball valve in the partially closed or fully closed position exposes polished spherical ball surfaces to moisture, condensation, and transit grit. Flange protectors must be bolted or strapped across all ports. Heavy trunnion ball valves must be timber-chocked on heavy skids to prevent rolling.

Send photographs before modifying the equipment. Preserve original tags, flange faces, packing, wiring, tubing, operators, and documentation. If prior service or condition is unknown, say so directly. A precise unknown is more credible than a guessed specification.
