Sell Surplus Safety and Relief Valves

Safety and relief valves are the ultimate mechanical fail-safe devices protecting pressurized vessels, piping systems, steam boilers, and storage tanks from catastrophic overpressure. Governed by ASME Section I (Fired Boilers) and ASME Section VIII (Unfired Pressure Vessels), these precision mechanical instruments feature calibrated springs, precision-lapped nozzles and discs, and certified blowdown rings.

Buyer’s notes

What matters when selling safety & relief valves.

Safety relief valve valuation is dictated by ASME code stamping ('V' for Section I steam or 'UV' for Section VIII pressure vessels), orifice designation (e.g., D through T orifice), inlet/outlet flange ratings, body metallurgy, and nozzle/disc alloy. Pilot-operated safety valves (such as Anderson Greenwood) and balanced bellows valves (such as Consolidated or Crosby) command premium buyout pricing.

Secondary market valuation and demand drivers

Industry leaders Consolidated (Baker Hughes), Crosby (Emerson), Anderson Greenwood, Farris (Curtiss-Wright), and Leser dominate secondary market demand. Large-orifice valves (L, M, N, P, Q, R, T orifices) in ASME Class 300, 600, 900, and 1500 flanged configurations carry significant value due to long factory lead times. Pilot-operated valves featuring snap-action or modulating pilots also represent high-priority acquisitions.

Field inspection and defect screening protocol

Never attempt to alter the set pressure adjustment screw, break factory lead inspection seals, or lap nozzles in an uncertified shop. Inspect the open outlet flange for foreign debris or corrosion scale inside the bowl. Check that balanced bellows are intact and that the bonnet vent is unblocked. Photograph the complete National Board nameplate clearly, capturing the set pressure (PSIG), capacity (SCFM or LBS/HR), orifice letter, and serial number.

Flange protection, packaging, and freight handling

Safety relief valves must always be transported in the 100% vertical upright position. Laying a spring-loaded safety valve on its side allows the heavy internal spring to exert side-load force on the spindle, potentially bending the stem or damaging the precision-lapped nozzle interface. Bolt or strap valves securely to hardwood pallet decks with timber blocking; seal both inlet and outlet flanges with heavy protective covers.

Send photographs before modifying the equipment. Preserve original tags, flange faces, packing, wiring, tubing, operators, and documentation. If prior service or condition is unknown, say so directly. A precise unknown is more credible than a guessed specification.

We assess equipment for purchase based on the available resale path and the cost of verification, handling, storage, and transportation. Submission does not guarantee an offer, but complete information allows a faster and more useful response.

Questions

Safety & Relief Valves seller FAQ

These answers describe our review process. They are not engineering, inspection, certification, or installation advice.

Shipping upright prevents lateral spring sag and side-load stress that can bend the internal spindle or misalign the precision-lapped nozzle and disc seating surfaces.
