Butterfly valve valuation divides strictly by engineering classification. Standard concentric resilient-seated valves (rubber-lined bodies for low-pressure water and air) are valued primarily in matching lot quantities. High-performance double-offset valves (Class 150 and 300) and severe-service triple-offset valves (Class 150 through 900) command high individual prices due to precision metal-to-metal seating and high replacement costs.
Secondary market valuation and demand drivers
Triple-offset butterfly valves manufactured by industry leaders such as Vanessa (Emerson), Bray, Fisher (8500 series), Keystone, and DeZURIK retain premium market value because they deliver bi-directional zero-leakage shutoff in high-temperature hydrocarbons and steam. Field inspection and defect screening protocol
Inspect the sealing edge of the disc for gouging, cavitation erosion, or chemical pitting. For resilient-seated valves, inspect the molded rubber or elastomer liner for cracking, hardening, or detachment from the body shell. Ensure the stem connection (splined, keyed, or double-D) shows no rotational backlash. Photograph the valve disc from both sides, the seat surface, and the manufacturer identification tag.
Flange protection, packaging, and freight handling
Butterfly valves must be transported with the disc positioned slightly ajar (approximately 10% to 15% open). Storing or shipping a resilient-seated butterfly valve with the disc fully closed causes permanent compression set of the elastomer liner, leading to seat failure upon installation. For wafer and lug valves, protect the exposed disc edge by clamping wooden spacers across the body faces.
Send photographs before modifying the equipment. Preserve original tags, flange faces, packing, wiring, tubing, operators, and documentation. If prior service or condition is unknown, say so directly. A precise unknown is more credible than a guessed specification.
