Comprehensive operational guide for packaging, palletizing, flange protection, and freight staging of industrial surplus valve inventories. This guidance helps a seller prepare information for a surplus-equipment review; it does not provide engineering, inspection, repair, certification, or installation advice.

Flange Face & Threaded Port Protection

The sealing surfaces of industrial valves—whether raised face (RF), flat face (FF), or ring-type joint (RTJ) grooves—are precision-machined interfaces that must remain completely free of scratches, dings, and rust. Even minor transit impacts can gouge a phonographic gasket finish, requiring expensive field refacing.

Secure heavy-duty molded polyethylene flange protectors or 1/2-inch exterior-grade plywood cutouts across every flange face using at least three heavy cable ties or perimeter bolts. For threaded NPT and socket-weld ports, insert plastic push-in plugs or wrap the threads with heavy-duty thread sealing tape and plastic caps.

Never leave valve ports open to atmospheric humidity, rain, or road grime during flatbed transit. Internal cavities must remain dry to prevent flash rust on machined discs, balls, and seating surfaces.

Pallet Selection, Weight Limits & Banding Standards

Standard lightweight grocery shipping pallets (rated for 1,500 lbs) are entirely unsuitable for industrial valves. A single 8-inch Class 600 cast steel gate valve can weigh over 800 lbs, concentrating immense load on a small footprint. Always utilize heavy-duty four-way hardwood GMA pallets (rated for 4,000+ lbs) or custom timber skids.

Position the heaviest valves in the center of the pallet deck to maintain an even center of gravity. Secure valves to the timber deck using high-tensile 3/4-inch steel banding or heavy-duty polyester strapping, passing the bands through bolt holes or around the valve neck. Never band across delicate actuator tubing, positioner linkages, or handwheel rims.

Use wooden 2x4 or 4x4 chocks nailed securely to the pallet deck on both sides of cylindrical valve bodies (such as trunnion ball valves or check valves) to prevent rolling or shifting under emergency braking loads.

Securing Actuated Packages & Extended Stems

Valves equipped with pneumatic diaphragm actuators, electric motor operators, or extended stems have elevated centers of gravity that make them prone to toppling. These assemblies must be secured with diagonal timber bracing or steel strapping extending from the pallet corners to the upper yoke.

Never lift or rig an automated valve by the actuator casing, positioner housing, or air supply tubing. Rigging straps must be choked securely around the main valve body neck below the bonnet flange. Mark the pallet with bright 'TOP HEAVY' and 'DO NOT DOUBLE STACK' warning labels.

Ensure actuator positioners, solenoid valves, and filter-regulators are protected from lateral impacts during loading. Wrap delicate instrumentation clusters in bubble wrap or corrugated cardboard cushioning before stretch-wrapping the entire pallet.

Weatherproofing & Outdoor Staging Protocols

If pallets must be staged outdoors or in open staging yards prior to freight carrier arrival, wrap each pallet in at least five layers of heavy 80-gauge UV-stabilized stretch film. Apply a heavy polyethylene pallet top sheet before wrapping the perimeter to prevent rainwater from pooling on upper actuator covers.

Keep pallets elevated on dry concrete or asphalt pads. Staging pallets on bare soil or gravel allows ground moisture to wick into wooden runners, rotting the timber and exposing heavy valve iron to condensation.

Clearly attach an itemized packing list inside a weatherproof adhesive shipping envelope affixed to the side of each pallet. Number each pallet clearly (e.g., 'Pallet 1 of 4', 'Pallet 2 of 4') matching the freight bill of lading.

Loading Dock Coordination & Driver Safety

Confirm the transport mode (standard 53-ft dry van, curtain-side flatbed, or open flatbed) with your buyer prior to carrier dispatch. Standard dry vans require a dock-height facility and a warehouse forklift to drive into the trailer. Open flatbeds require ground-level forklift side-loading or an overhead bridge crane.

Ensure your facility's forklift is rated for the heaviest pallet in the shipment. The loading operator must verify that pallet forks extend fully across the pallet stringers before lifting to prevent tipping.

Have the commercial driver inspect the load securing before departure. The driver and facility shipping clerk must both sign the Bill of Lading (BOL), recording the piece count, pallet count, and agreed transport destination.
