Flange Face & Threaded Port Protection

The gasket sealing face of an industrial flange—whether raised face (RF), flat face (FF), or ring-type joint (RTJ)—is a precision-machined surface featuring concentric serrations engineered to achieve a tight seal. Any mechanical impact, scratch, or gouge across the phonographic finish renders the flange unusable without expensive shop remachining.

Protect every flange face with heavy-duty polyethylene push-in flange protectors, molded plastic flange caps, or 1/2-inch exterior plywood discs secured through at least three bolt holes with heavy cable ties or temporary bolts. For threaded NPT and socket-weld ports, insert plastic pipe plugs or wrap threads in heavy-duty protective tape.

Never ship valves with open cavities exposed to atmospheric humidity, rain, or road grime. Internal seats and balls must remain clean and dry throughout transit.

Pallet Selection, Weight Limits & Timber Blocking

Standard commercial grocery pallets (rated for 1,500 lbs) are entirely inadequate for industrial valves. A single 6-inch Class 600 cast steel gate valve can weigh 450 lbs, while an 8-inch unit exceeds 800 lbs. Always use heavy-duty hardwood GMA four-way pallets (rated for 4,000+ lbs) or custom timber skids constructed from 4x4 runners and 2x6 deck boards.

Position the heaviest valves in the center of the pallet to maintain an even center of gravity. For cylindrical valve bodies (such as trunnion ball valves, swing check valves, or plug valves) that tend to roll, nail 2x4 wooden chocks securely to the pallet deck on both sides of the body bowl.

Never allow valve flanges or operators to overhang the perimeter edge of the pallet deck. Overhanging components are guaranteed to be struck and damaged by neighboring freight or forklift masts during terminal cross-dock handling.

Banding Standards: Steel vs High-Tensile Polyester

Stretch wrap alone is completely incapable of securing heavy industrial valves to a pallet. Valves must be anchored to the wooden pallet deck using at least two, and preferably three, continuous bands of 3/4-inch high-tensile steel strapping or heavy-duty polyester cord strapping tensioned with a manual strapping tool and secured with crimped steel seals.

Pass strapping through flange bolt holes or around the valve body neck below the bonnet. Never band over delicate actuator tubing, positioner linkages, terminal boxes, or handwheel rims, as strap tension will bend or crush these components.

Use cardboard or plastic corner edge protectors beneath the strapping where it bends over pallet runners to prevent friction wear during long-distance transit.

Stabilizing Top-Heavy Actuated Valve Packages

Automated control valves and motor-operated valves (MOVs) possess high centers of gravity due to heavy pneumatic diaphragm casings, electric motor gearboxes, and extended yokes. When loaded on a pallet, these units will topple under emergency highway braking unless diagonally braced.

Construct custom 2x4 diagonal timber bracing extending from the outer corners of the pallet deck up to the actuator yoke. Secure the bracing with heavy structural wood screws. Mark the pallet clearly with high-visibility 'TOP HEAVY' and 'DO NOT DOUBLE STACK' freight labels.

Cushion delicate instrumentation clusters (FIELDVUE positioners, solenoid valves, air filter-regulators, limit switches) with heavy bubble wrap or corrugated cardboard wrap before applying exterior stretch wrap.

Weatherproofing & Bill of Lading (BOL) Documentation

Wrap each finished pallet in at least five continuous layers of heavy 80-gauge UV-stabilized stretch film. Apply a plastic pallet top sheet before wrapping the perimeter to prevent rainwater from pooling on top of actuator casings during flatbed transit.

Affix a clear packing slip envelope to the side of the pallet containing an itemized packing list and cross-referencing pallet number (e.g., 'Pallet 1 of 3'). Ensure the commercial freight Bill of Lading (BOL) records the exact piece count, pallet count, freight class, and total gross shipping weight.
