Grade A: New in Factory Crate / Original Box (NIB)

Grade A represents pristine, factory-new surplus inventory that has never left its original manufacturer packaging. The valve body, bonnet, and operator remain in sealed wooden crates or heavy manufacturer cartons with original desiccants and vapor-corrosion-inhibiting (VCI) wraps intact.

All factory-installed plastic or wooden flange protectors are securely fastened, ensuring zero atmospheric exposure to internal seats and sealing faces. The manufacturer nameplate, CE/ASME certification tags, and packaging barcodes are crisp, unpainted, and fully legible.

Grade A inventory commands the highest recovery percentage (often 40% to 65% of original manufacturer list price) because it can be placed directly into critical process storerooms without secondary refurbishment.

Grade B: Unused Project Surplus / MRO Storeroom Spare (NOS)

Grade B designates valves that were purchased for capital projects or maintenance storeroom stock but were never installed in process piping. The valve may have been removed from its original crating and stored on open warehouse shelving or cantilever racks.

Cosmetic wear is limited to minor exterior paint scuffs, light surface dust, or handling scratches on handwheels. Crucially, the internal seats, bore, and flange sealing faces must remain unblemished, protected by flange covers or end plugs. The factory nameplate must be intact and unpainted.

Valves in this category are highly liquid across secondary markets, appealing to contractors and plant operators who require immediate emergency replacements at a substantial discount compared to factory lead times.

Grade C: Decommissioned / Used Take-Out (Clean & Intact)

Grade C covers valves that have been installed in industrial service and subsequently removed during planned unit turnarounds, plant modernizations, or line re-piping. The valve has been fully isolated, drained, and washed down in accordance with plant environmental procedures.

Exterior surfaces may exhibit paint oxidation, light surface rust on carbon steel components, or bolt witness marks on flange bolt holes. However, the pressure-retaining body casting must be free of structural cracks, deep erosion, or weld burns. The stem must stroke smoothly without severe binding.

Grade C valves are evaluated based on the integrity of their core castings and internal metallurgy. Clean used valves from utility water, steam, or non-corrosive hydrocarbon service maintain steady demand from certified valve repair and reconditioning facilities.

Grade D: Weathered / Boneyard Storage (Requires Refurbishment)

Grade D encompasses valves that were stored outdoors in pipe yards, staging boneyards, or unheated facilities exposed to rain, snow, and sunlight. Flange protectors may be missing or deteriorated, allowing environmental moisture to enter the internal cavity.

Carbon steel bodies typically exhibit heavy surface oxidation and scale, though the base metal remains structurally sound. Stems may be frozen or stiff due to dried packing or internal rust. Nameplates may be tarnished or weathered, though stamped characters remain recoverable under angled lighting.

These units are purchased as repairable cores. Buyers evaluate Grade D inventory based on body casting weight, alloy scrap value, or the feasibility of a complete shop overhaul (sandblasting, new trim, seat lapping, and repacking).

Grade E: Damaged / Scrap / Obsolete (Parts Only)

Grade E inventory includes valves with severe structural compromise: cracked or torch-cut body castings, warped flange necks, severely bent stems, cavitation-perforated body bowls, or missing major components (such as bonnets or gates).

Except in cases of rare exotic metallurgy (solid Titanium, Hastelloy, Monel, or Inconel where metal weight carries intrinsic recovery value), Grade E carbon steel valves have negative freight economics and should be routed directly to local scrap metal recycling processors.
