Resale demand for gate valves is driven by verifiable engineering specifications rather than raw metal scrap weight. ASME Class 150 and 300 cast steel gate valves in standard pipe sizes (2" through 12") represent universal maintenance inventory with rapid turnover. High-pressure Class 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 valves—including pressure-seal bonnet designs and chrome-moly alloy forgings—command premium buyout pricing due to lengthy factory lead times on replacement castings.
Secondary market valuation and demand drivers
Valuation is strongest for recognized Tier-1 domestic and international manufacturers including Velan, Crane, Powell, Pacific, Bonney Forge, Neway, and Kitz. Forged steel small-bore valves (1/2" through 2" Class 800) packaged in original master cartons achieve high lot value. For large-bore cast steel valves, the presence of intact bevel gear operators, rising-stem thread covers, and unblemished raised-face flange serrations ensures maximum return.
Field inspection and defect screening protocol
Inspect the raised-face or ring-type joint (RTJ) flange faces for radial scratches or dents that would breach gasket compression. Stroke the handwheel or gear operator to ensure the stem rises smoothly without binding or galling. Check the packing gland follower bolts for corrosion. Photograph the valve body casting markings (size, class, WCB/CF8M logo), the manufacturer identification plate, and both end ports.
Flange protection, packaging, and freight handling
Gate valves must always be transported in the fully closed position to prevent the wedge from vibrating against the body guide ribs and gouging seating surfaces. Flange faces must be protected with heavy molded plastic or 1/2-inch exterior plywood discs. Heavy valves must be strapped to hardwood GMA pallets with high-tensile 3/4-inch steel banding, chocked with timber to prevent rolling.
Send photographs before modifying the equipment. Preserve original tags, flange faces, packing, wiring, tubing, operators, and documentation. If prior service or condition is unknown, say so directly. A precise unknown is more credible than a guessed specification.
