In high-pressure steam service exceeding 1,000 psig, conventional bolted-bonnet designs become impractical because huge bonnet bolts stretch under thermal stress, causing joint leaks. Power plants deploy pressure-seal bonnet gate, globe, and check valves, where internal system pressure acts upward against a flexible metallic gasket, tightening the seal as pressure increases.
Surplus pressure-seal valves in ASME Class 900, 1500, 2500, and 4500 represent premier surplus assets due to multi-year factory production lead times and immense replacement costs. Leading manufacturers include Velan, Crane, Powell, Flowserve / Edward, and Conval.
Valuation depends heavily on body metallurgy: forged carbon steel (A105) for boiler feedwater, chrome-moly alloy steel (ASTM A217 WC6, WC9, A182 F11, F22) for main steam, and modern advanced creep-strength enhanced ferritic steels (such as Grade 91 / P91 / F91) for supercritical steam cycles.
Boiler Feedwater, Attemperator & Turbine Bypass Valves
Power plant control loops feature severe-service control valves engineered for high differential pressure drops. Boiler feedwater recirculation valves and steam turbine bypass valves experience extreme flashing and cavitation, requiring multi-stage anti-cavitation trim cages and solid Stellite hardfacing.
Attemperator and desuperheater spray valves modulate high-pressure boiler feedwater injected directly into superheated steam headers to maintain precise turbine inlet temperatures. These precision assemblies feature tight Class V or VI shutoff and rapid stroke speeds.

Steam Safety Valves: ASME Section I 'V' Stamp
Overpressure protection on power boilers is governed strictly by ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section I. Steam drum, superheater outlet, and reheater safety valves carry the prestigious National Board 'V' code stamp, featuring open spring yokes, lifting levers, and precision blowdown adjustment rings.
Premier manufacturers include Consolidated (Baker Hughes) Maxiflow, Crosby (Emerson), and Dresser. Because Section I safety valves are customized to exact set pressures and relieving capacities, surplus buyers evaluate them based on body casting metallurgy, inlet flange rating, orifice designation, and nozzle/disc condition.
Never attempt to alter the set pressure screw, remove lead seals, or lap safety valve nozzles in an uncertified facility. Surplus safety valves are acquired for formal shop recertification by certified 'VR' stamp repair facilities.
Material Traceability: Grade 91 (P91) & Creep-Strength Alloys
In modern high-efficiency power plants, advanced creep-strength alloys (such as ASTM A182 F91 and A217 C12A) are required to withstand 1,050°F+ main steam without premature metallurgical creep failure. These materials require specialized welding and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) procedures.
Surplus Grade 91 valves must be accompanied by verifiable Certified Material Test Reports (CMTRs) confirming proper heat treatment, austenitizing, and tempering. Unverifiable Grade 91 inventory carries significant commercial risk due to liability concerns over metallurgical microstructures.

Heavy Handling & Butt-Weld End Preparation
Power plant steam valves are predominantly butt-weld end (BWE) designs to eliminate flanged joints in high-temperature lines. A single 12-inch Class 2500 pressure-seal gate valve can weigh over 5,000 lbs with heavy wall thicknesses exceeding 3 inches.
The factory-machined weld bevels (typically ASME B16.25 compound bevels) must be protected from mechanical gouging and impact damage during transit. Secure heavy-duty steel or wooden end caps over all weld bevels.
