Sanitary Standards: 3-A, EHEDG & Electropolished Finishes

Valves designed for direct food and beverage product contact must meet 3-A Sanitary Standards and European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) criteria. These standards mandate internal surface finishes polished to Ra 32 micro-inch (0.8 µm) or better, typically achieved through electropolishing.

Valves must have self-draining internal geometries free of dead legs, pockets, or exposed threads where bacterial bio-films could accumulate. Wetted metallurgy is almost universally ASTM 316L stainless steel (CF3M) with low carbon content to resist pitting from aggressive Clean-In-Place (CIP) caustic and acid wash cycles.

Surplus valuation is highest for valves that retain unblemished internal finishes, free of mechanical scratches or corrosive pitting.

Sanitary Valve Types: Mixproof, Diaphragm & Butterfly Valves

Hygienic processing utilizes three dominant valve architectures: double-seat mixproof valves, sanitary diaphragm valves, and sanitary butterfly valves. Mixproof valves (such as Alfa Laval Unique or SPX Flow) are complex pneumatic assemblies that allow two incompatible fluids (e.g., milk product and CIP wash solution) to flow simultaneously through the same valve body without cross-contamination.

Sanitary diaphragm valves (such as GEMÜ, Saunders, or ITT Pure-Flo) utilize flexible PTFE/EPDM diaphragms to isolate the operating mechanism completely from the product stream, making them standard on aseptic filling lines.

Sanitary butterfly valves featuring quick-clamp split bodies, silicone or EPDM seats, and manual multi-position squeeze handles represent high-volume utility surplus across breweries and wineries.

Connections: Tri-Clamp, DIN & SMS Hygienic Unions

Unlike industrial flanged valves, sanitary valves utilize quick-disconnect hygienic union fittings that can be rapidly disassembled by sanitation personnel without tools. The North American standard is the Tri-Clamp (sanitary clamp) fitting, featuring a precision-machined feral face with an elastomeric gasket groove.

European processing equipment frequently utilizes DIN 11851 threaded sanitary unions or SMS (Swedish Milk Standard) connections. Record the exact connection type and tube OD size (e.g., 1.5", 2", 3", 4" sanitary tube OD).

Do not confuse sanitary tube OD with nominal pipe size (NPS). A 2-inch sanitary tube has a different outside diameter and wall thickness than standard 2-inch schedule 40 pipe.

Elastomers & Seal Compliance: FDA, USP Class VI & Clean-In-Place

All elastomeric components in sanitary valves—including diaphragms, mixproof radial seals, and butterfly seat rings—must comply with FDA 21 CFR 177 regulations and often USP Class VI pharmaceutical protocols.

Common compounds include EPDM, FKM (Viton), Silicone, and PTFE. Disclose whether surplus valves were exposed to high-temperature steam sterilization (SIP) or aggressive chemical washdown.

Unused surplus valves with sealed factory plastic bags containing replacement seal kits and elastomer certification documents are highly prized.

Packaging & Freight for Polished Stainless Equipment

Polished 316L stainless steel surfaces are highly vulnerable to scratching during handling. Never allow metal-to-metal contact between polished valves on a shipping pallet.

Each sanitary valve should be bagged in polyethylene wrap or cushioned with clean corrugated cardboard dividers. Tri-clamp ferrules must be fitted with plastic protective snap-on caps to prevent edge nicking.
