In aggressive acid and halogen service where standard stainless steels corrode rapidly, chemical plants deploy fully lined valves. These units feature ductile iron or carbon steel structural bodies lined internally with 3mm to 5mm of virgin melt-process PFA (perfluoroalkoxy), ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene), or PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride).
Surplus lined plug valves (such as Flowserve Durco T-Line), lined ball valves, and lined butterfly valves (such as XOMOX / Crane ChemPharma) carry immense resale value due to lengthy factory production lead times. A single 4" PFA-lined plug valve can retail for several thousand dollars.
When evaluating lined valves, inspect the flange sealing faces under bright illumination. The lining must be completely smooth, free of radial gouges across the raised face, and showing zero blistering or chemical discoloration beneath the polymer layer.
Exotic Metallurgy: Hastelloy, Monel, Inconel, Alloy 20 & Titanium
For severe organic acids, wet chlorine, hot sulfuric acid, and high-temperature corrosive synthesis, chemical plants specify solid exotic alloys. Common casting grades include Hastelloy C-276 (CW-12MW), Alloy 20 (CN7M), Monel 400 (M-35-1), Inconel 625 (CW-6MC), and commercially pure Titanium (Grade 2 / C-2).
Solid alloy valves retain high intrinsic value regardless of market fluctuations due to the high market value of the raw base metals. A 6" Class 300 Hastelloy C-276 ball valve contains hundreds of pounds of high-value nickel-molybdenum alloy.
Always locate and photograph the casting heat number and ASTM alloy stamp on the valve body. Providing original manufacturer Material Test Reports (MTRs) confirming elemental chemistry ensures immediate premium valuation.
Fugitive Emission Standards: Bellows-Seal & Low-E Packing
Stricter EPA Clean Air Act regulations and LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) programs require chemical facilities to eliminate volatile organic compound emissions from valve stem seals. Chemical plants deploy bellows-seal gate and globe valves or valves equipped with certified low-emission (Low-E) packing systems complying with API 624 or ISO 15848-1.
Bellows-seal valves feature a hydroformed multi-ply metal bellows (typically Inconel or 316L) welded to the valve stem and bonnet, creating a hermetic metallic barrier that eliminates stem packing leaks entirely.
When inspecting surplus bellows-seal valves, ensure the secondary packing gland is intact and check that the bellows has not suffered mechanical torsional fatigue. Bellows-seal valves in pristine condition are eagerly acquired by specialty chemical buyers.
Decontamination Certification & Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Safety is paramount when handling chemical surplus. Every valve that has been exposed to chemical process fluids must undergo thorough neutralization, washing, and drying before transport. Sellers must provide a completed Facility Safety and Decontamination Clearance Certificate.
Attach copies of the corresponding Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for any chemical media previously conveyed through the valve. If valves were utilized in specialized applications (such as hydrocyanic acid, phosgene, chlorine, or ethylene oxide), specific decontamination verification steps must be documented.
Ensure flange faces are sealed with heavy gasket-retaining plastic covers to contain any residual moisture and protect interior surfaces during transit.
